What's the deal with the Grateful Dead?

I know them, you probably know them too, but how many songs do you know?

Wandering through Wikipedia… your daily dose of the weird and wonderful from the greatest website in the world!

They’re the psychedelic legends of 60s rock, famed for their live shows and their “deadhead” fans and their legions of followers. They’re a part of pop culture, parodied on The Simpsons and other places.

But have you ever heard a song by them?

The Grateful Dead, the most famous band you’ve never actually heard?

I realised I was in this category recently, knowing that this was a band with decades of popularity and a huge pop cultural influence, but I’d never heard a single song! Maybe it’s because they were more known for their live shows, or that they’d only ever had one major single. Or maybe they just never crossed my path musically, even though they were well-known enough to be familiar anyway.

So we should remember the musical legacy of Bill Kreutzmann, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Phil Lesh. Think I should go and have a listen!

Did you know?

Despite their 30-year career, and thousands of fans, the Grateful Dead only ever had one charting single: Touch of Grey, in 1987.
