In this family, one daughter was an ardent communist, one was in love with Hitler, one was married the the leader of Britain’s fascist party… you get the idea!
The Mitford sisters were a varied bunch, that’s for sure.
The grew up wealthy socialites in 1920s and 30s Britain with parents who were both fascist sympathizers. Despite this, only two of them ended up sharing the same ideology, with one going in completely the opposite direction and the others not being defined by ideology.
A brilliant description of them by The Times journalist Ben Macintyre in 2007, described them as "Diana the Fascist, Jessica the Communist, Unity the Hitler-lover; Nancy the Novelist; Deborah the Duchess and Pamela the unobtrusive poultry connoisseur".
Don’t be too worried about your family next time!
Did you know?
Recent diaries were discovered that detailed the extend of Unity Mitford’s relationship with Hitler. Historians believe them to be genuine and show in uncomfortable detail just how close she was to the monster.
